Buses

Public buses in New York City are operated by New York City Transit, a division of the MTA. NYC DOT maintains city streets and sidewalks, bus lanes and bus shelters, and implements street design changes to increase bus speeds and enhance safety for all road users. Buses are dispatched from 20 garages across New York City, with heavy-duty maintenance done at three facilities throughout the city.

All buses in New York have a letter and a number. The letter indicates the borough where the bus travels: Manhattan (M), Brooklyn (B), Queens (Q), Bronx (BX) and Staten Island (S).

The NYC bus network which transports 802.5 million passengers per year, exists since 1919. Its network includes a fleet of 5,700 buses divided into local buses, express buses and rapid transit buses. In New York City, bus service is provided every day, 24 hours a day.
