The first stamp issue of the U.S. was offered for sale on July 1, 1847, in New York City consisted of an engraved 5-cent red brown stamp depicting Benjamin Franklin (the first postmaster of the U.S. Benjamin Franklin created postal routes, implemented mail wagon service, and worked to maintain an inexpensive rate of postage. The original 5ยข rate could be used to transport a standard 1/2 ounce letter up to 300 miles.
